WHERE WORDS ONCE WERE, by Finegan Kruckemeyer - Presented by Student Producing Theater
SPT Presents Where Words Once Were: A World Where Language Is Rationed and Freedom of Speech Is Forbidden
The University of Virginia’s Student Producing Theater (SPT), a class within the UVA Department of Drama, proudly presents Where Words Once Were by Finegan Kruckemeyer. The production will be performed on December 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Helms Theatre in the UVA Drama Building.
This lyrical coming-of-age story transports audiences to a society where language is strictly controlled — and one boy dares to speak beyond the limits. Both poetic and powerful, the play explores how words shape identity, love, and resistance in a world that has forgotten how to listen.
Playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer describes the story as “set in a dystopian time where language is rationed, a sentence can get you sentenced, and the silent are rising. Our young hero, Orhan, discovers that a word can change the world.” Through this striking premise, Where Words Once Were warns of the dangers of censorship and control, yet celebrates the human need for expression — even when words are forbidden.
Admission is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage audience members to arrive early. Tickets do not need to be purchased. The performance is free.
