Research Overview

The Department of Drama integrates arts and artists into the research mission of the University, alongside the cultural life of Charlottesville and central Virginia. That work spans traditional theatres, studios, and shops, as well as outdoor, site-specific, and virtual spaces — and it is carried out by faculty who are, at the same time, committed teachers and advisors.

Practice as research

  • Plays, musicals, and dance concerts staged in the department's own theatres and beyond
  • Design and technical work—set, costume, lighting—developed as original creative work
  • Digital media and film projects that extend performance past the stage
  • Faculty work produced for theatres and festivals around the world

Written & published scholarship

  • Books and essays on opera and the history of classical and folk music
  • Historical and critical studies of theatre and performance
  • Scholarship examining how theatre history itself is taught
  • Work placed in national and international journals and presses
