Biography
John Frick was recently inducted into the The College of Fellows of the American Theatre.  He is the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the American Stage and Screen (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) which was selected as the Best Book of 2012 by the American Theatre & Drama Society.  He is also the author of Theatre, Culture and Temperance Reform in Nineteenth-Century America {Cambridge University Press, 2003}; and New York’s First Theatrical Center: The Rialto at Union Square (1985); and is co-editor of The Directory of Historic American Theatres and Theatrical Directors: A Biographical Dictionary.   Professor Frick has published articles and reviews in Theatre Journal; The Drama Review; The  Journal of American Drama and Theatre; The New England Theatre Journal; New Theatre Quarterly; Nineteenth Century Theatre and Film; Theatre Symposium; The American Historical Review; The Social History of Alcohol Review; Alcohol and Temperance in Modern History: An International Encyclopedia; the Encyclopedia of Modern Drama; The Encyclopedia of New York City; Realism and the American Dramatic Tradition; Encyclopedia of American Urban History; and The Cambridge History of the American Theatre.  He has entries on the Uncle Tom’s Cabin & American Culture, the Circus in America, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center websites.  Dr. Frick is on the editorial boards of Theatre Survey, Theatre Symposium, and the Journal of Performing Arts Leadership in Higher Education.  He is the Past Editor of the journal Theatre Symposium and is Past President of the American Theatre and Drama Society.  He is the 2010 recipient of the Betty Jean Jones Award as the Outstanding Teacher of American Theatre.  While in New York, he worked Off-Off Broadway as a dramaturg and as a stage manager with theatre and dance companies. He received a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
