HAVIVRA, by Alexandra Déglise, Guest Artist in Residence
This musical tale follows the childhood and youth of Havivra Da Ifrile, one of two survivors of the eruption of Mount Pelée on the Caribbean Island of Martinique, May 8, 1902.
This light-hearted musical performance transports the audience to the streets of the French colonial capital city. The music will immerse us in the sound world of Saint-Pierre at the beginning of the 20thcentury, at the time when “Biguine" music was born and flourishing, incorporating various musical styles including polka, mazurka, Creole waltz...
Maher Beauroy's musical composition will be imbued with these traditional rhythms that anchor us in this era while conveying the modernity of the character of Havivra, who wants to break free from the limitations imposed on her at the time. Following her journey through New York to New Orleans, the performance will progress to explore more contemporary and varied musical innovations, including jazz and pop.
