Tim Cunningham is a nurse, writer, and clown. He is a graduate of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre (2001). In addition to joining the Dell’Arte Company post graduation, he has performed regionally at the Virginia Stage Company and Mum Puppettheatre. He has performed with the Big Apple Circus Clown Care as well as consulted for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baily Circus. Since 2003, he has worked closely with the non-profit organization Clowns Without Borders-USA. In addition to devising and performing clown shows within refugee communities and war zones, he has also served as Executive Director of CWB-USA. He currently serves as a member of their Board of Directors. His performances have taken him to more than two dozen countries and they have also brought him to the art of nursing.
Cunningham is a registered emergency nurse and decided to become so after working as a clown in hospital settings. He went on to complete is Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) at the Mailman School of Public Health (Columbia University) in 2016. He is interested in the bridges between medicine and laughter while exploring the ethics that surround them. He is honored to have a joint appointment at the Department of Drama and the School of Nursing.
